Clockworks Academy is an online school founded by Dr. Paul Moffett. With an emphasis on joyful critical reading, Clockworks Academy offers courses on great classic works of fiction and popular culture.

Faculty

Dr. Paul Moffett, Principal

Dr. Moffett holds a Phd in medieval literature from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and an MA in English literature from the University of Manitoba. His primary research area is late medieval Arthurian romance, and especially Sir Thomas Malory. He has published academic work on the utopian vision of Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta, race in The Handmaid’s Tale, and language in Black Panther. He hosts or co-hosts four podcasts: Halfway Expert, Poplar Opinion: A Call the Midwife Podcast, and the now-complete Clockworks: A Legion Podcast and Way Too Seriously. He is also an award-winning poet and a published author of fiction.

Dr. Moffett teaches the Frankenstein Course, the Dracula Course, the Beowulf Course, the Medieval Werewolves Course, the Zombies Course, and the King Arthur Courses.

Dr. Mikayla Hunter

Dr. Hunter completed her doctorate in medieval literature at the University of Oxford. She earned her M.A. in medieval studies at the University of Bristol and her B.A. in English literature at Whitman College. She is SEDA-accredited as an instructor of higher education. Her doctoral research focused on outlaw ballads and Middle English romance literature, and she has published academic work in the fields of both medieval literature and modern medievalism, including a chapter in the recently-published Queenship and the Women of Westeros.

Dr. Hunter teaches the Robin Hood Course and the Game of Thrones Course.

Sam Lehman

Sam Lehman is a PhD student at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She studies adaptation theory, Arthurian literature, and popular culture, with a focus on the landmark fantasy novel The Mists of Avalon. Beyond academia, Sam has worked as a writer, editor, social media manager, and community manager for various publications and organisations. She has a Master of Arts in English Literature from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Humanities and English from Carleton University.

Sam Lehman teaches the Decameron Course.

Jacob Vanderkloet

Jacob Vanderkloet is a recent graduate from the University of Calgary where he obtained a master’s degree in Greek and Roman Studies. Jacob also has an undergraduate degree with joint honors in History and Classics, a Diploma in Ancient Worlds, and a Certificate in Ancient Languages from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Jacob has a wide range of research interests in the study of antiquity including philology, comparative mythology, Greco-Roman religion, and archaeology, but his specialty is in the study of ancient Greek history and historiography.

Jacob Vanderkloet teaches the Odyssey Course.
